About MCAS Beaufort

The Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort is one of the United States military’s most important installations. It supports operations for the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, attached II MEF units, and Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island/Eastern Recruiting Region, ensuring success for commands and missions.

MCAS Beaufort is located in the South Carolina lowcountry and was originally opened as a Naval Air Station in 1943 during WWII, supporting advance training and anti-submarine patrol operations over the southeastern seaboard. MCAS was redesignated as a Marine Air Station in 1960. 15 years later, in 1975, the airfield was named Merritt Field, after Major General Lewie G. Merritt.

Nicknamed “FighterTown,” MCAS Beaufort is an important part of local history. Built on former plantation lands, the air station is tucked in the southeast corner of South Carolina’s lowcountry.  The base now covers 6,900 acres and roughly 4,700 military personnel serve there.

It may get a little noisy living next to an air station, but for good reason. As the MCAS claims, “The noise you hear is the sound of freedom.”
